Best video editing tools for beginners

Thankfully, there are lots to choose from and ones that provide portrait, landscape and square templates for you to just adapt and use.

Let’s start with my favourite.

Canva

Oh Canva, how I love thee. How my 7-year old loves thee to create her endless unicorn presentations!!

Seriously, Canva will make you think you are a graphic designing genius thanks to its intuitive click and drop style and its gazillion pre-formatted templates.

Their slogan says it all. “Design anything. Publish anywhere.”

If you make just one graphic, you can easily resize it for Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Stories, Reels, YouTube, presentations, business flyers, logos….Canva doesn’t seem to have any limits.

If you want to try Canva Pro free for 30 days just click on this link.

Promo

Promo takes any thought out of making your video, by providing you with premade templates with intro and outro slides built-in.

You can also pick from a range of music to add that extra dimension.

You’ll have to upgrade if you want to use your own fonts and branding though.

Pros: Great for making short social media ads

Cons: Its £39 a month for the basic package

Biteable

If you want slick animated graphics then this software will totally appeal. This is a great platform for making ads, product showcases and explainer videos.

Pros: Lots of animated templates options on the free version. Very easy to edit for your purposes. Delightful interface.

Cons: You’ll have to upgrade to remove the watermark and export in HD. It’s $29 a month for the Plus version but totally worth it for making those super quick videos,

Biteable is also great for creating social media videos for Reels, Stories and Twitter.

Filmora

This is a really easy to use video editor for Windows OS which gives you the ability to add your own edits, effects, music and more.

Plus, they also have a new Template Mode in the Filmora X Update.

Pros: Lots of video tutorials on their YouTube Channel to help you edit like a pro. Plus there are LOADS of film effects and audio effects you can use – including Auto Re-Frame where you can track movement. If you want to transform a horizontal video to a vertical video but need to track the action, the Auto Re-Frame can do that.

Cons: It’s currently only available for Windows and you’ll need to download and install this and sign up for a pro account to remove the watermark.

Best video editing tools for intermediate users

If you have some basic editing skills and some budget then check out Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere Pro. However, I highly recommend Da Vinci Pro – which is FREE!!!

If you want even more suggestions check out PC Magazine’s video editing software review.

Da Vinci Pro

I use a mix of all these tools, but Da Vinci Pro is my go-to for editing showreels, YouTube videos and more complex and longer documentary-style videos.

Check out this promo video I made using Da Vinci Pro.

Da Vinci Pro is a MASSIVELY powerful editing suite, akin to something like Avid or Final Cut Pro for broadcast.

I like to create image overlays in Canva that I can easily drag and drop into the timeline in Da Vinci.

Pros: Lots of video tutorials to get you started. I use it because it’s super easy to add in *SRT caption files that I can burn onto my videos.

Cons: Not as intuitive as Filmora.

Conclusion

There are so many online software video editing tools you can make to transform your content marketing. I’ve just checked out a few here. But you could also try other pre-made template video marketing tools like:

  • Vimeo – video ads
  • Animoto– drag and drop video editor
  • Magisto – similar pre-made templates for social video

Give them a go. See what fits.
